WORKSHOPS:

DIANE AESCHLIMAN - PORTRAIT DRAWING
The Head in Light: Preface to the Portrait This workshop will begin with an introduction to the structure of the head and the orientation of the features to the overall mass of the skull. By understanding the arrangement of the lateral and vertical axis lines, you will learn to represent the models features in relatively accurate proportion and position on a voluminous skull, in any rotation. Day #1: Working with vine charcoal and charcoal pencils, we will first draw the skull in two positions and then superimpose the features over the understructure. Day #2: Working on toned paper, starting with some gesture drawings. We will then move to studies in shadow and light, still using charcoal, with the addition of white charcoal pencil. Day #3: You may choose to do a longer, more finished drawing or to paint a grisaille study of the head. This is done with one color of oil paint on a white ground.
DATES APRIL 9 -11 FRI-SAT-SUN|
Fee: $285 + model fee TBD

STILL LIFE OIL PAINTING
Grace DeVito
June 14, 15, 16 9:30-5:30    Fee:  $185.

In these workshops I will do a demo of a still life and a portrait set up so the participants can see the particulars on how I approach painting. I generally work in the same manner no matter what the subject. Each painting brings a new set of problems to solve dealing with drawing, value, edges, color, and paint handling. We will go over how to set up a still life or figure, lighting, design, paint technique, creating form etc. The participants will work from the same set up / pose and I will give them gentle and instructive critiques.

IGOR BABAILOV - PORTRAIT PAINTING
http://babailov.homestead.com/Workshops.html
The focus of studies in this Portrait workshop is a concentration on developing and improving the skill of drawing, which is essential in the painting as well. Mr. Babailov shares his knowledge and experience of working in the tradition of the Old Masters with the limited number of colors (7-9) on his palette, yet producing vibrant and colorful paintings. The 3-day workshop will cover the following topics: DRAWING" - as a Fundamental for Strong Painting PASTEL" - from Leonardo da Vinci to the Impressionists. OIL PAINTING" - the Medium of The Masters. If you can draw a portrait, you would be able to draw anything you want. Ilya Repin, (famous turn of the century Russian artist)
DATES JUNE 4-6 FRI-SAT-SUN
Fee: $395 + model fee TBD

EGG TEMPERA PORTRAITURE IN THE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE TRADITION
Instructor:  Jeremiah Patterson
June 18 and 19  Fee: $195.  Materials - $20.
In this two-day workshop, participants will be shown the techniques for beginning an egg tempera portrait; traditional methods used and perfected by Italian Medieval & Renaissance masters such as Giotto, Fra Angelico & Botticelli.  Participants will be shown the basic techniques for beginning a tonal ink understudy, and then the traditional working of the portrait with a terre verde and verdaccio underpainting in readiness for its eventual over-glazing to achieve rich and lively flesh-tones.  This workshop is appropriate for artists at all levels from beginner to advanced, and experience with egg tempera is not necessary.  Pigments and true gesso panel will be provided.

This is a wonderful preparation and addition to Koo’s class as it addresses a different method that can be used well with the more modern approach. Contact: beardsleygallery@gmail.com or Phone: 203-762-3312

EGG TEMPERA PORTRAIT WORKSHOP WITH KOO SCHADLER
Koo Schadler's material List

5 days 9:30-4:30 June 20-24 Fee: $650.
Egg tempera is renown for its luminosity, making it an ideal medium for rendering the human face. This portrait workshop begins with a photography session. You will learn how to light and pose a model, to create visually strong photographs that already look like beautifully designed paintings. You spend the remainder of the week developing a portrait in egg tempera, with ongoing individual instruction and critiques from Koo. Koo also will work on a painting of her own, so you can see firsthand how she develops an egg tempera portrait. You may work from your own photographs, from photos supplied by Koo, or from a copy of an Old Master egg tempera portrait. Open to all levels of painters, from beginner to advanced. A demonstration on the essentials of working in egg tempera will be provided for beginning students.

Oil Painting for Young People (ages 10 and up) with Catherine Puccio
Mondays, 3:30-5:30 Fee: $255. for 11 weeks or $95. for 4 weeks
Saturdays, 1:30 - 3:30 Fee: $255. for 11 weeks or $95. for 4 weeks
An introduction to the traditional art of fine oil painting. Using a limited prismatic palette, and painting alla prima (directly onto the canvas), like the American Impressionists, students will learn to paint the flow of light across an object. By painting still life set-ups that are illuminated by one light source, students will come to recognize a clear shadow pattern, distinguish between varying values, as well as warm and cool temperatures, and focus on compositional unity. The student will learn the fundamentals of fine oil painting: how to prepare a palette, mix paints, and manipulate the brush to create a painting which is illuminated and has three-dimensional qualities. Drawing skills will be emphasized in the process.
This course also provides an opportunity for serious young art students to add something unique to their PORTFOLIO which will set them apart from others.

Saturdays 10:30-12:30 Fee: $255. for 11 weeks or $95. for 4 weeks
This course will focus on the fundamental elements of a successful drawing. Many of these skills can be translated to the art of fine painting as well. Using graphite or charcoal pencil, students will draw from dramatically lit still-life set-ups and casts. Teens looking to build their PORTFOLIO will find this course an invaluable addition to their body of work.

Students will learn how to break down a composition into proportions, how to use line to describe form and texture and how to 'mass in' shadows to create unity in their work. The importance of value recognition--the relative lightness or darkness of an object---will also be discussed in creating a successful work of art. Many of these skills can be translated to the art of fine painting as well. Using graphite or charcoal pencil, students will draw from dramatically lit still-life set-ups and casts.
