Joszef Domjan Bio
JOZSEF DOMJAN was one of the most important color woodcutter artists in the twentieth century. He was born in Hungary in 1907 and attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest where he was trained in painting.
The Royal Academy, now called the Hungarian University of fine arts is organizing a symposium and major retrospective exhibition about the life and work of this world-renowned artist entitled “Domjan 100”. Domjan became an international recognized artist while living in Hungary during his early years. He developed a special and unique style in the color woodcut medium. During a six year tour of china, exhibiting and lecturing Domjan was awarded the title “Master of the color Woodcut”, and honor given only once every hundred years.
After the Hungarian uprising in 1956 he immigrated to the US and settled in NY. Domjan became a celebrated artist in the west with over 500 exhibitions on 4 continents: His color woodcut prints can be seen in many major museums in America, Japan, and Europe.
